Gamelan Asmaradana Live At Jeoju Sori Festival 2005
It was only in July 2005, that the ensemble received confirmation from the organising committee for the Jeoju Sori Festival, Korea. We had less than 2 months to raise funds, pack our instruments and book tickets for our first international performance.
Through active fundraising, and timely cash sponsorhsip from the National Arts Council and the Lee Foundation, in SIngapore, the ensemble was able to make its' way to Jeonju City, Korea.
We left Singapore on 25th September, and arrived Seol on 26th. Two festival officers greeted us at the airport and led us to a coach. It was another 4 hours to Jeonju City. We just too exhausted to enjoy the beautiful scenery along along the way.
On Thursday, 29th September 2005, about 5:30pm Korean time, Gamelan Asmaradana gave a short recital and interview live on Korean TV. It was in many ways a first for us - first time on a National TV, and first time performing live at an international festival. In full costume, we did our best, braving the cool wind and sunshine.
On Friday, 30th September 2005, 7:00pm, Gamelan Asmaradana gave a resounding performance at Moak Hall, the main hall for the Jeoju Sori Festival. The concert was attended by more than 1000 people. We played several traditional Javanese gamelan pieces and a few contemporary pieces that included saxophone, drum kit, keyboard and base guitar.
It was certainly a great, unforgettable experience, as well as a historical moment for Gamelan Asmaradana, Singapore's first professional gamelan ensemble.
We look forward to more international festivals.
